What is the Organic Trade Association? What are the standards?
The Organic Trade Association (OTA), founded over 20 years ago, is the association in the United States that advances and promotes organic food products and agriculture. They protect and promote the growth of organic trade and encourage public awareness of the importance of growing and producing organic products. They’re a business member type organization and have over 1500 members. They have a mission to protect the environment, the public, farmers, and the economy! The OTA has a standard which they defined for organic labeling. Understanding these labels will help you when deciding what type of clothing you want to buy for your baby! Here are the labels and a basic understanding of what they mean:“Organic” This means that at least 95% of the agricultural fibers are organically grown.“Made with Organic products” This means that at least 70% of the fibers making up the product are organically grown“Less than 70% Organically Products Constituents” This one probably has some organically grown fibers, but it’s less than 70% so it could be 65%? It could be 10%? You really don’t know.“100% Organic” This one is the whole shebang. All of the fibers are organically grown. They’re also certified (this includes the threads). The processes are up to par on the requirements in the standard for being 100% organic. This one is the best of the best.Leave a Reply |
